Texas ranks No. 14 for adult obesity

Texas has the 14th highest rate of adult obesity in the country, according to a recent report by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation .

The report, “F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing America 2009,” found that Texas has obesity rates of 27.9 percent, according to the report.

Texas ranked No. 20 for obesity in children, with 32.2 percent of the state’s 10- to 17-year-olds being obese or overweight.

Colorado had the lowest rate of adult obesity at 18.9 percent. In Mississippi, adult obesity was highest at 32.6 percent, making it the fifth year in a row that the state has topped the list. Mississippi also had the highest rate of obese and overweight children at 44.4 percent.

The study found that adult obesity rates in 23 states have increased in the past year and no states saw a drop in obesity rates in the same time period.

According to the study, adult obesity in the United States now exceeds 20 percent in 49 states and Washington, D.C. Four states have rates above 30 percent, including Mississippi, West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee.

Adults with a body-mass index — a calculation based on weight and height ratios — of 30 or higher are considered obese. Children with a body-mass index at or above the 95th percentile are considered obese and children at or above the 85th percentile are considered overweight.

The report said that current economic conditions could worsen the obesity problem in the U.S. because food prices continue to rise, making it more difficult for families to eat healthy foods. In addition, social welfare programs are becoming overextended as unemployment numbers climb. Rates of depression, anxiety and stress, which are higher during a recession, are also linked to obesity, the report concluded.
